What's a Backseat Driver?

A Backseat Driver is a passenger in a vehicle who knows the rules of the road and isn't shy to let the driver know when they aren't being safe! If this describes you, and you are a fourth grader in the State of Maine, then the Backseat Driver Contest is perfect for you!

The Maine Department of Transportation started the Backseat Driver Program in 2000 to spread the word about work zone safety. In order to participate, fourth grade teachers must register on this website. Teachers can download contest rules and classroom curricula to teach their students about driver safety in work zones.

The Maine Department of Transportation hopes students will take what they learn about work zone safety in the classroom back to their parents, like good Backseat Drivers!
